Street Art in Germany: Bridge Gallery Lörrach (1)

This relative simple but very impressive spray painting touched my soul, when I saw it for the first time. How true the graffiti writer ‘Nathalie’ is!

Lörrach is a city in southwest Germany. It is located in the valley of the river ‘Wiese’, close to the French and the Swiss border. North of the city a four-lane freeway [A98] traverses the valley. The bridge, which is almost 1.5 km long und up to 32 m high, rests on 28 concrete double piers. Their huge, light surfaces were covered with graffiti of mediocre quality in the past.

In 2010 the city of Lörrach declared spray painting on these bridge pillars as legal but requested each street artist to register free of charge at a municipal office. In return the artist has received a ‘Green Card’ which has granted the right to spray paint a specific pillar as he/she likes.

The project started in the summer of 2010 and has attracted skilful street artists from all over Europe. Meanwhile the freeway bridge ‘Wiesentalbrücke’ has developed into one of the most fascinating open air galleries for street art in Central Europe. The pillars have been painted over regularly and, thus, there is always new art to admire when I revisit this place.
