From Schynige Platte to Grindelwald First (Bernese Alps) (1)

The hike from Schynige Platte via the Faulhorn to Grindelwald First is THE classic high-Alpine tour in Switzerland. A marvelous mountain panorama accompanies you along the entire route. To the north lie the shimmering turquoise waters of Lake Brienz and Lake Thun. To the south, the skyline is dominated by the silhouettes of the majestic Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau [from left to right in today’s photograph].

From Schynige Platte the trail first heads towards Männdlenen-Cabin. Later it becomes steeper, passing through a rocky area. The Faulhorn summit (2’681 m) is finally reached by a trail up its flank. The route then zigzags down to beautiful Lake Bachalp before continuing to First along a path with equally stunning views. Walking time of a well-trained hiker is approximately 6.5 h. The hike is strenuous. Hiking boots are highly recommended.

In the morning, the main chain of the alps – seen from the hiking trail – was in extreme backlight. This and the glistening snow made it very difficult to capture it well. This became much easier in the afternoon.
