Finsteraarhorn (4‘274 m) is the highest mountain in the Bernese Oberland. It is hidden behind Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, but due its height it can be seen from most mountains 150 km away. There are several very different routes leading to the top, the majority take between 12 and 15 hours.

The description of the normal route sounds ‘easy’, although rope, axe and crampons are a must. In bad weather, one will be exposed to avalanches and ice on rocks. Moreover, the Finsteraarhorn hut is far away from civilization and bad weather may become a trap that makes it difficult to escape.

The first ascent goes back to 1829, August 10th and was accomplished by a Swiss scientist named J.J. Hugi, accompanied by two local guides.
