Hiking the Large Mythen (Canton of Schwyz) (1)

The Large Mythen [left peak; in German: Grosser Mythen] is a huge, impressive rock in the Canton of Schwyz, the heart of Switzerland, between the towns of Schwyz and Einsiedeln. Together with the Small Mythen [middle peak; in German: Kleiner Mythen] and Haggenspitz [right peak], it forms the Mythen massif [see today’s photograph].

The Large Mythen is 1’898 m high. Hiking to its top is very poplar when there is no snow, but quite a challenge for a couch potato. The ascent to the summit of the Small Mythen [1’811 m] is too difficult for hikers. To reach its top you need climbing gear.

The climb up the Large Mythen is short but very steep. A bit under 2 km to the top, one gains about 400 m of elevation. This makes it a tough venture.
