The Blauen Mountain consists of alternating layers of limestone and clay. The rocks contain numerous fossils of marine creatures, such as conches, snails, ammonites, belemnites, corals, sea urchins and many more. They are sediments of the ancient Jura Sea, which once covered the area of the Jura Mountains.
Because the limestone of the Blauen Mountain is fairly hard, it only crumbles at the surface during decomposition and forms poor soil. This is the reason why the area is wooded and has never been used for the cultivation of crop plants.
