Doubs Nature Park (5)

Doubs Nature Park (5)

Today’s photo shows a feature, hikers in the Doubs Nature Park have to be aware of: Once you entered the canyon there are only very few exit trails. The reason for this is that the steep cliffs of the canyon walls are stacked on top of each other for several hundreds of meters. A trail up there would be a physical impossibility. The previous photo also shows this nicely.

In the Middle Ages the hydropower of the Doubs river was used to turn water wheels for grinding and to power sawmills and smitheries. The workshops are long gone but the paths to the nearest market places still exist. In the 19-kilometer-long stretch of the Doubs valley which I walked, I passed by two exit trails. The one I finally used was long and very steep.
