Autumn Hike in the Swiss Jura (8)

The castle Wildenstein is embedded in a medieval cultural landscape, whose main features have not been altered for a very long time. Its essential part is a 500-year-old oak grove. Back then the trees were planted to fatten pigs on acorns.

The oak grove has been under cantonal protection since 1995. The old trees are home to various tree-dwelling lichens, insects, and birds. In the meadows around the trees rare plants are growing, e.g. wild orchids.
